BhagyaYour rashi is where the Moon sat at the moment you were born. Your nakshatra is the finer cut inside it, and it is the one Vedic astrology leans on when the question is timing.
The 27 divisions
The zodiac is 360 degrees. Cut it into 27 equal parts and each part is 13 degrees 20 minutes wide. That part is a nakshatra. The Moon crosses about one of them per day, which is why the whole system runs on lunar motion instead of solar.
How your birth star gets fixed
Whichever nakshatra the Moon occupied at the minute you were born is your janma nakshatra. It never changes. Each nakshatra is split further into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and your pada decides your navamsa placement and, by tradition, the syllable your name is supposed to start with.
What it is actually used for
- Muhurta, picking a time to start something
- Marriage matching, where the nakshatra and its lord drive most of the ashtakoot score
- Daily prediction, since the Moon moves into a new nakshatra roughly every day
- Naming, through the syllable tied to your pada
What it does not decide
A nakshatra is not a personality verdict. It sets tendency and timing, and the rest of the chart argues with it. Two people born under Mula on the same day do not get the same life, because the ascendant, the running dasha and the house placements all move on their own.
Bhagya works out your janma nakshatra from your date, time and place of birth, then tells you each morning what the Moon is doing against it.
